Hair Oiling 101

Have you ever had someone massage your head? It’s the best! By far my favorite part of a massage or haircut.

But you don’t have to pay someone to rub your head. Just do it yourself! With salons across the country closed, this seemed like the perfect time to offer $10 OFF BeeLove’s hair oil.

Massaging the scalp feels ahh-mazing—it’s honestly one of my favorite things. Stimulating the circulation of blood in the head and neck area alleviates stress, soothes and relaxes the nerves, and helps our overall mood. Ahh…

And don’t forget the direct benefits to your scalp and hair:

  • Strengthens hair follicles

  • Supports hair growth

  • Adds shine and volume

  • Nourishes and moisturizes

  • Protects hair from the damaging effects of the sun and harsh weather

  • Minimizes dandruff

  • Reverses damage from chemical hair treatments

Here's how to do it:

A word of warning before we begin: You can apply too much hair oil, which will clog your pores. Start with a just a little and and add more if needed, as you do this regularly and get to know your hair.

How often should you oil your hair?

Depends on the type of hair and skin you have. I oil just the tips of my hair daily (about a dime size amount) and try to do a deeper whole scalp treatment once a week. If you have extremely dry and damaged hair, 2-3 times a week would be beneficial and then you can decrease as you see results.

First, warm the oil.

Place the bottle of oil in a mug with hot water and let sit for a few minutes. Over-heating can destroy nutrients and burn your skin, so don’t microwave or boil the oil.

Then, apply.

Little by little, massage the oil onto different parts of your scalp and along the length of your hair. Slow, deliberate movements are relaxing while steady, vigorous movement helps enhance energy and circulation. Take your time and enjoy this part.

Last, cover your scalp.

Use a head cover or shower cap. Leave the oil on for at least 30-60 minutes before shampooing and rinsing.

Overnight:

An overnight oil treatment works well If you have very rough, dry, or coarse hair. Put on a hair wrap before bed. You can also place an old towel on your pillow to avoid staining the pillow case and sheets. Wash out in the morning.

Tips:

  • Wrap your oiled head in a hot towel for 10 minutes. This helps absorb the oil into your scalp and hair.

  • Apply just before a shower, put your hair up and let the steam do its thing.

  • When you want to wash oil out of the hair, the best way is to wash with shampoo before getting wet in the shower.

  • Use warm oil instead of cold oil. It’s more effective, absorbs better and just feels so good.

  • If oiling after washing hair, apply only to the tips, avoiding the roots as it can weigh your hair down and make it look greasy.

Alternatives

If you don't want to apply oil directly to your hair, try one of these other methods for hair oiling:

Fill a bowl with water and add a tablespoon of hair oil to it. Dunk your hair and soak for a few minutes, making sure your whole head is soaked in. Wrap a towel around your head and leave soaking for an hour or so before washing.

Or, fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of hair oil. Shake well and spray onto damp hair.
